AMIA 2009

Program Highlights:

In his address to the membership, Dr. David Blumenthal, Office of the National Coordinator for HIT, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, thanked AMIA members for their contributions to the field of informatics and HIT and provided a snapshot of the current status of HIT as the national underpinning to health care reform. He previewed ONC’s efforts regarding workforce training a few days prior to ONC’s release of information about grants available to help develop and strengthen the health information technology workforce.

Industry Day:

As a result of AMIA’s industry partners increasing their focus on biomedical and health informatics and AMIA’s commitment to fostering increased collaboration among members as they try to solve current challenges in health care, through the Industry Advisory Council (IAC), AMIA introduced a new session track dedicated to industry-led presentations and panel discussions.

Two industry-led round tables contributed to the corporate buzz at AMIA 2009:

• The Computer Science Corporation (CSC) led a highly engaged group of 20 individuals in discussion that examined challenges of designing standardized EMRs to serve various health delivery systems, workflows, and drivers of health information technology implementation.

• Pfizer Inc. led another group of 20 in a productive discussion about improving public health and safety post-market.
